Studio Alchima

Studio Alchima is an Italian co-operative design group. It was founded by Alessandro Guerriero, Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsassm and Michele De Lucchi among many others in 1976 and lasted until as long as 1991, later inspiring the Memphis Group. It was the new style and way of designing objects. The idea of functionality were dismissed and many of there products were very questionable. Alchimia's work was presented publicly through drawings, costumes, videos, exhibitions as well as performance. Their aim was to create experimental designs that had value and in a way was exclusive rather than something that would appeal to everyone.

" Alchimia working on values, usually seen as negative , weakness , emptiness, absence, and depth , which are understood today as things side to what is outside , solid, and violent, and therefore as what can be removed. If the transience of the times does not allow the existence of certain goals , if even philosophy seems closed for the future, and if it is impossible to think of transformation general and rational , the group Alchimia is concentrated in itself. Search details of thought within himself , with the sole intention of pointing his vocation . poetry is holding his act of introversion , the minimum will creative beyond all judgement . This is " new moral " Alchimia ". -Alessandro Mendini , 1985
