Henry Van De Velde

Henry Van De Velde studied painting from 1880 to 1883 at the Academie des Beaux Arts in Antwerp and then at the Corolus Duran in Paris from 1884 to 1885. In 1887 he helped found "L'Art Independant" and 1889 he became a member of the brussels avant-garde group called "Les XX".

Van De Velde's First Project was the Bloemenwerf house which he built for himself in 1895 in Uccle. Soon after Samuel Bing an art director commissioned him to design four rooms for his Paris Gallery "L'art nouveau'. Van De Velds furniture designs consist of powerful curves and became one of the most important contributes or factors of his work.  He then founded the self-titled furniture production company "Henry Van De Velde". the first branch opened in Berlin in 1899 but was later sold in 1900 to Wilheim Hirschworld.
