Einstein Tower - Erich Mendelsohn

The Einstein Tower is an astrophysical Observatory in Potsdam, Germany. It was built by Erich Mendelsohn a German Architect who was most known for his expressionist architectural style as well as for developing dynamic functionalism in his projects for department stores and cinemas. H was also known to be a pioneer of art deco and streamline moderne architecture, most notably with the design of the mossehaus, an office building in Schutzenstrasse, Berlin in 1921.
It was first designed in 1917 and then took 3 years for completion (1919-1921) but didn't actually become operational until 1924. It was one of Mendelsohns first major and noteworthy projects. It mainly consisted of concrete however due to difficulties during construction due to the shortages form the war the building was created out of brick covered in Stucco. The construction of the building meant that plans would need to be changed accordingly however because they weren't there were a lot of problems such as damp and cracking meaning extensive repair work had to be done five years after initial construction and some are still being renovated to this day.
In 1999 for its 75th anniversary the building went under full renovation repairing all damage caused from world war II .
Einstein never actually worked in the tower however Mendelsohn did guide him through the building and after hours of waiting on approval Einstein used the word "Organic" to describe his reflection of the building.
